Western Digital adds WD Gold hard drives to its data center offering

Western Digital added WD Gold datacenter hard drives to its color portfolio designed for a range of applications – including small- to medium-scale enterprise servers and storage, and rack-mount datacenter servers and storage enclosures. WD Gold drives are currently available at select U.S. distributors, resellers and through the WD Store.

With up to ten times the workload capacity of desktop drives, WD Gold hard drives employ advanced technology to deliver among the best in reliability, capacity, power efficiency and performance. Designed for a multitude of datacenter-specific applications, WD Gold hard drives are ideal for high-availability server and storage arrays that demand robust storage device available with 24/7 premium customer support.

WD Gold datacenter hard drives include new electronics that enhance power efficiency up to 15 percent. Its HelioSeal technology enables up to 26 percent lower power consumption; better performance of up to 18 percent sequential performance improvement over previous generation WD Re 4TB datacenter drives, and up to 30 percent improvement in random write performance over previous generation WD Re 6TB datacenter drives through media-based cache.

WD Gold incorporates leading design, manufacturing and test processes to achieve one of the highest reliability ratings of 2.5 million hours MTBF (8TB offering). The data center drives comes in a new, high-capacity configuration of up to 8TB that offers HelioSeal helium-technology for performance, with ideal capacity per square foot, power efficiency and low power consumption for datacenter environments.

WD Gold datacenter hard drives feature an optimized design with an 8TB option that helps reduce the TCO (Total Cost of Ownership) of servers and storage systems, benefiting IT administrators challenged with growing storage capacity needs on limited budgets. WD Gold hard drives will also include a premium dedicated support line for customers worldwide.

“Western Digital has a proven history of providing award-winning purpose-driven products for unique requirements of each application environment, like WD Red, WD Purple and WD Blue drives,” said Brendan Collins, vice president of product marketing, Western Digital Corporation. “WD Gold is a pinnacle part of the color portfolio strategy and another step in creating optimized drives for the markets we serve. Our continued goal is to deliver the most competitive and reliable solutions on the market.”

Last week, WDLabs, a business growth incubator of storage solutions leader Western Digital announced the WD PiDrive 314GB, a storage device engineered to serve the Raspberry Pi community with low-power USB operation, affordability, reliability and ease of integration. The WD PiDrive 314GB device is based on Western Digital’s proven, high-volume 500GB platform with design changes made specifically for Raspberry Pi.

Customizations made to the drive’s magnetic recording and electrical system operating set-points align with Raspberry Pi’s USB data and power design to reduce the electrical power load of the hard drive on Raspberry Pi, while still maintaining sufficient performance to deliver maximum USB data transfer rate. Platform design flexibility and the manufacturing tuning process enabled WDLabs to create this specialized product for Raspberry Pi without compromising quality and reliability.

The WD PiDrive 314 GB HDD is designed to support Raspberry Pi growth by addressing barriers to hard drive adoption such as affordability, power loading and system set-up. The company has also maintained key strengths of hard drive technology, including mass-storage value, high data integrity and reliability.
