Ethernet Alliance hails arrival of 200G and 400G Ethernet with approval of IEEE 802.3bs

The Ethernet Alliance, a global consortium dedicated to the continued success and advancement of Ethernet technologies, commended on Thursday the IEEE 802.3 Ethernet Working Group on the approval of IEEE 802.3bs, Standard for Ethernet Amendment: Media Access Control Parameters, Physical Layers, and Management Parameters for 200 gigabit per second (Gb/s) and 400 Gb/s Operation.

The specification of 200 gigabit Ethernet (200GbE) and 400 gigabit Ethernet (400GbE) operation across various interconnects will help satisfy mounting bandwidth demands from cloud-scale data centers, internet exchanges, co-location services, service provider networks, and other bandwidth intensive application spaces, while delivering better economies of scale and lower cost-per-port performance.

Last March, the Ethernet Alliance demonstrated 400GbE during the Optical Society’s optical networking and communications conference and expo, OFC 2017. In keeping with its leadership role in educating the industry, market, and users, and supporting broad Ethernet interoperability, the organization is looking ahead to future interoperability testing events and demonstrations.

Key stakeholders like OEMs, component vendors, and interconnect providers looking to get ahead of the 200GbE and 400GbE deployment curves are encouraged to do so by becoming Ethernet Alliance members and participating in upcoming events focused on multi-vendor interoperability.

In September, the Ethernet Alliance made its new Power over Ethernet (PoE) certification program available to the public. With rising numbers of both standards- and non-standards-based PoE solutions entering the market, introducing a simple method for determining products capable of seamless interoperability is essential.

The organization’s PoE certification program serves as a clear identifier for interoperable, standardized PoE products,  as well delivering a solid foundation for the next generation of IEEE 802.3 PoE standards.

Launched for members in May 2017, the Ethernet Alliance PoE certification program is now open to the general industry. Backed by a resource library designed to help streamline the path to certification, it aims to minimize market confusion and elevate the end user experience.

Within the program, power sourcing equipment (PSE) and powered devices (PD) manufacturers can submit PoE-enabled products for testing and validation against the Ethernet Alliance’s industry-defined test plan. Tests may be performed at the University of New Hampshire InterOperability Laboratory (UNH-IOL), or vendors can self-test using approved equipment.

Upon test completion, vendors will be authorized to use the Ethernet Alliance’s official certification logo and be added to a public registry of certified PoE products.
