Gurunavi deploys Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform for operational efficiency, driving greater business value

Red Hat Inc., provider of open source solutions, announced this week that Gurunavi, Japan’s restaurant guide, has adopted Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform. Powered by OpenShift, Gurunavi aims to build a stronger and more flexible software infrastructure, develop this infrastructure on a private cloud using Kubernetes, and further improve service development capabilities in order to help accelerate the creation of new business and expansion of its existing business.

Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform provides a flexible Kubernetes-based application infrastructure. It can strengthen collaboration between developers and the IT department around a single platform, enabling more consistent application creation, deployment and management among hybrid cloud infrastructure, and enabling provisioning of applications under shorter development cycles and at higher efficiency.

Built with open source innovation and technologies including Red Hat Enterprise Linux and Kubernetes, it is used by enterprise companies worldwide.

Gurunavi is a restaurant information search site in Japan that provides sales, promotion and support services for restaurants with 65 million unique monthly users and almost 16 million registered members. In recent years, the company has expanded its business areas by operating an e-commerce site that showcases gifts for event receptions, as well as providing a point-of-sale (POS) management system, restaurant reservation management, and property search service.

To diversify the business and enhance competitiveness, Gurunavi increasingly needs to roll out new services more rapidly. As a 20-plus-year-old company, it sought to continue growing its offerings and business lines, but needed an IT infrastructure that could match its goals. To address this need, Gurunavi sought to establish a system infrastructure capable of handling expansion and diversification of business under the “Gurunavi Multi Cloud Platform concept.” This is intended to contribute to business growth by using technologies centering on “optimal choice” and “improvement of development speed” to help optimize cost performance in IT, which is an essential part of the development and offering of each service.

Seeking an application-focused infrastructure that helps to address these needs, the company selected Red Hat for its track record of delivering open source solutions for enterprise companies that are designed to help increase infrastructure and operational efficiency and accelerate application delivery.

To support the project, a Red Hat Consulting team participated for about three months delivering workshops and hands-on trainings for system concept planning, in-house analysis of current status, and configuration of the development environment.

Due to the division of labor in its development and operations teams and an increased burden on operations from the diverse services provided, lead time for infrastructure preparation arose as an issue for Gurunavi. Accordingly, developer teams focused on using self-service and Linux container technologies that can speed up resource provisioning.

At the same time, they selected and adopted the Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform, which is a Kubernetes platform with developer tooling, delivery workflows, and management solutions helping to maintain controllable infrastructure environments while enabling increased developer productivity.

At Gurunavi, application developers previously needed to manually request IT resources from the operations team. With Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform and Linux container technology, the service is now prepared by the operations department on OpenShift, enabling a self-service catalog to set up a new environment.

As a result, both the developer and the infrastructure managers can reduce manual tasks.

The use of containerized infrastructure software made it possible to carry out the update tasks in bulk rather than individually, and therefore Gurunavi’s IT team has been able to reduce its operations management burden. Additionally, Gurunavi now has a base for highly extensible and flexible hybrid cloud environments and application portability has been made more possible with containers.

Currently, two new services are running on the same system, and in the future Gurunavi plans to use Red Hat OpenShift infrastructure on a company-wide scale to further enhance services and help to strengthen competitiveness.
